Brethren;
As always, the time draweth near. I have been out wandering in the wilderness, spreading the word to GOD²S (finned) creatures one at a time, teaching them what little that I can, and sending them back among their own to spread the Word -- as I have been given to do. The Unwashed¹, as it were, call this ³catch and release.² ( In truth, that is the same thing that I call it, but I need just a bit of literary license here.)
³The wise Fisher keepth Thy Rod and Thy staff close at hand, for one never knows when the call may come² (When fishing the Pacific Northwest Steelhead, The calls seem to come more often when the river is dropping and clearing.). HIS ways ARE mysterious.
Just in passing, I should mention that keeping thy rod close at hand can be less of a burden than you might think, with the advent of ever more five, six, and seven piece rods. Just think! With one (perhaps two) of these stashed in your car, toolbox, briefcase, purse or whatever, you could be ready to answer the call at a moments notice.
Remember, as in all things, when asking the CREATOR to bestow gifts upon yourself, be sure to let HIM know that you are going to need a few words of wisdom (or a valuable gift) for the spouse.
When you hear the call to make a ³Presentation² , one would be well advised to search the river¹s edge in stealth, keeping thy shadow behind thee. Leaping and splashing in the current will certainly draw attention, although I doubt overmuch that the multitudes will harken near. A gentle presentation can be more effective than a harsh or noisy one- but-not always. When you feel called upon to fly fish for God¹s creatures, remember to harken back to when you were called.
Remember that God¹s creatures have no knowledge of the hours spent casting and tying knots and quiet
reflection contemplating each day spent on the river. They know nothing of how painstakingly you have crafted your fly. They can only recognize you as threatening or not. Approach softly as they know not that you only wish to bestow God¹s blessing on each of them. You can only present the fly in the best manner possible--- only they can decide to take it.
As in all things, seek comfort in knowing that the offering and presentation are your best efforts. Let your Spirit guide the cast and the river reflect your soul and each day will be a victory.
Be wary,my brethren, of the slippery rocks and the harsh fishers who would steal your place in the river. Remember always that you have no need to covet special fishing spots, for you shall be heir to all the rivers.
Be dry always, and go with God.
